Wilko: Union demands retailer’s bosses be hauled in front of MPs

Wilko chiefs should be brought in front of the Business and Trade Select Committee to answer questions over the retailer’s collapse, the GMB union has demanded.

Last week, trade union GMB wrote to committee chairman Liam Byrne MP to call for a special emergency session to hold the retailer’s chiefs to account after 10,000 jobs were lost following its collapse.

Wilko bosses shelled out £77m in dividends to the Wilkinson family and shareholders during the decade running up to its failure.

GMB Union national officer Nadine Houghton said: “From ignoring clear warnings about the business’ future, to dishing out millions in payouts for owners and shareholders, Wilko management has failed at every turn.

“Wilko workers deserve answers from the company that crushed their livelihoods.

“The new select committee chair should call an urgent emergency session on Wilko to demand those answers”.

In September, the Pensions Regulator launched plans to investigate dividends extracted from the retailer as part of a wider investigation into its collapse.

Last week, The Range, which acquired the brand’s IP, confirmed the locations and opening dates of its first three new concept stores, ahead of a wider store rollout.
