Primark gives store staff 9.1% pay rise

Primark is raising the hourly rate for thousands of store staff by 9.1%.

The fashion retailer said it was increasing the average rates for all retail assistants in London to £12.56 and to £12 for those based across England, Scotland and Wales.

The pay rise, effective April 1, applies to its 27,000 store employees following the news last year it was scrapping its age-related pay rates for under 23s.

Primark UK retail director Kari Rodgers said: “Our colleagues do a brilliant job every day serving our customers and we want everyone to be fairly rewarded and recognised for their hard work.

“We hope this pay increase goes some way towards demonstrating our continued thanks for all that they do in our stores and for our customers.”

Primark’s investment into staff pay follows its announcement in January that it was funneling £100m into its UK stores this year through new openings and refurbishments as it marked 50 years on the British High Street.
