The GMB has condemned Amazon following yesterday’s announcement that 16,000 roles will be axed globally.
The union, which has more than 620,000 members across various industries in the UK, released the statement after the online retailer and media company confirmed the cuts on Wednesday 28 January.
Retail Gazette understands the UK jobs affected by the cuts will be in corporate roles and the number is believed to be in the hundreds.
Amazon’s corporate offices are in London and Manchester.
Rachel Fagan, GMB Organiser, said: “Amazon is showing itself for what it is; a company that cannot be trusted to do the right thing by working people in the UK.
“Now is the time for decision makers to recognise Amazon as a company fixated on eye-watering profits at the expense of workers and local people.”
A spokesperson for Amazon told Retail Gazette details of the restructuring could be found in a blog post by Beth Galetti, senior vice president of People Experience and Technology at Amazon.
According to the business, as of December 2025, it employed approximately 75,000 staff in the UK, “at sites and offices, large and small, across the country”.
