Morrisons stores chief David Lepley has resigned from his role after eight years at the supermarket.

Lepley, who joined Morrisons in 2016 from Asda, has spent the last four years as its group retail director.

M&S attempted to poach Lepley in 2019 but he decided to remain at Morrisons as its operations director.

It is unclear whether Lepley will be replaced, The Telegraph reported.

His departure comes as new boss Rami Baitieh has vowed to “reinvigorate” the supermarket under his bold transformation plan.

“Since the pandemic, Morrisons has not been on peak form. Our market share has slipped slowly and consistently and (underlying) sales have been below the pack for a while,” he said.

As such, Baitieh said he was inviting customers to join its management meetings and at monthly customer roundtables in stores to provide insights on how it could improve.

Last week, Morrisons revealed it had sold its 337 petrol forecourts in a £2.5bn deal to Motor Fuel Group, which is also owned by Clayton, Dubilier and Rice.
