Sainsbury’s is in early-stage discussions with staff in its Tu Clothing team over potential operational changes that could lead to job cuts.
The grocer is understood to be reviewing parts of the clothing division, including buying and merchandising functions, as it looks to reshape the team in line with its wider strategy.
A final decision on the potential restructure is expected in the coming weeks.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “As we move into the final year of our Next Level Strategy, we are looking at the shape of our clothing team to ensure our focus is on what matters most to our customers.
“While we will regrettably lose some roles as part of this process, we expect to see many created as well.”
Tu Clothing remains a key part of Sainsbury’s non-food offer. Clothing sales rose 4.8 per cent in the year to 28 February, following a strong spring and summer performance, although this was partly offset by unseasonal weather in the second half.
The potential changes come after Sainsbury’s announced a separate restructure in February that could see around 300 roles cut across its supermarket and Argos operations.
At the time, the retailer said the affected positions included roles within its data and technology teams.
Sainsbury’s is now in the final year of its Next Level Strategy, which is focused on strengthening its core food business, improving customer value and simplifying operations across the group.
