The White Company CEO Paula Nickolds to step down

The White Company chief executive Paula Nickolds is leaving the business at the end of May after two years at the helm.

Nickolds, who joined the retailer in 2024, is understood to be stepping back to spend more time with her family. The brand has embarked upon the search for both an interim leader and a permanent replacement.

The White Company said Nickolds had led the business through a difficult period for the retail sector, with trading impacted by both a challenging consumer backdrop and disruption linked to its warehouse transition.

However, The White Company said the business was now beginning to see signs of progress following the actions taken under her leadership, adding that she would leave with “real momentum” building.

Nickolds said: “I am proud of what the team has achieved over the past two years in genuinely difficult circumstances. There is much still to do, but the foundations are in place for a confident future.

“Stepping back now was not an easy decision, but the right one for my family at this time. The White Company will always have a special place in my heart, and I wish it, and everyone in it, every success.”

Founder Chrissie Rucker thanked Nickolds for her “commitment and leadership during an exceptionally demanding time”.

“She has guided the business with resilience and dedication, and we are grateful for the important contribution she has made in positioning The White Company for the future,” Rucker said.

Nickolds joined The White Company after a senior retail career spanning some of the UK’s best-known high street names.

Before taking the top job, she was general merchandise commercial director at Sainsbury’s, where she oversaw its non-food offer, including fashion own-brands and brand partnerships.

Prior to that, she spent 25 years at John Lewis Partnership, rising to managing director of John Lewis before later becoming executive director of brand.

Her departure comes as The White Company continues to evolve its proposition following its 30th anniversary last year, when it unveiled a refreshed clothing vision with a greater focus on quality, comfort and style.

It said the foundations had been laid for a more confident future, despite the difficult market conditions it has faced in recent years.
