Iceland is set to launch a dedicated plastic-free Christmas range for the crucial period to meet the demand for more sustainable options.

The discount grocer’s managing director Richard Walker said he assigned the buying team with designing a plastic-free set of Christmas menu options, which is comprised of about 30 products, Retail Week reported.

Walker wanted the plastic-free range to not be a “token effort” but to illustrate Iceland’s environmentally-conscious goals.

“We’ve taken some big strides in the standard ranges, but for bespoke seasonal ranges it was more difficult to land,” he said.

“We’ve developed around 30 plastic free products across starters, mains and desserts. I didn’t want it to just be a few things, I wanted it to be a proper range.”

Iceland will be extending the plastic bag-free trial to more of its stores after a successful pilot at its Hackney branch.

The bag trials will “collectively save over 210,000 plastic carrier bags from being newly purchased”.
