Prada has appointed a chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer for its North America division.

Malika Savell has joined from French luxury conglomerate LVMH, where she served as cultural diversity director.

At Prada, she will be responsible for developing policies, strategies and programmes to help ensure there is diverse representation of cultures and perspectives within the company.

This will involve working with the group’s global leadership team to foster an inclusive culture.

Savell will report directly to Prada chief executive for US, Marcelo Noschese, but will also work closely with the luxury brand’s diversity and inclusion advisory council, which is chaired by artist Theaster Gates and Oscar-nominated Selma director Ava DuVernay.

Prada first launched its diversity council in February 2019 after its use of blackface imagery in one of its products was met with controversy.

It aims to “elevate voices of colour within the company and fashion industry at large” while working to develop “diverse talent” and expand opportunities for fashion students of colour.

The council will also work with Prada to partner with universities and organisations to promote internships and apprenticeships in diverse communities.
