M&S appoints new strategy director Melanie Smith

M&S has announced the appointment of its new director of strategy Melanie Smith, a day after posting dive-bombing profits.

She will now become part of M&S‘s operating committee working alongside the newly appointed director Jill McDonald who has been drafted in to lead a turnaround effort in its clothing arm.

The committee also consists of food director Andy Adcock and customer and marketing director Patrick Bousquet-Chavanne.

Set to take on the role at the end of the month, Smith brings experience from Bupa where she was global marketing and strategy director, and most recently from consumer investment boutique Smith Herbert where she acted as managing director.

“It‘s a new role designed to look forward and develop future growth opportunities as we continue to recover the business,” an  M&S  spokeswoman said.

She is the latest in a raft of appointments taken on by chief executive Steve Rowe as he presses on with his overhaul strategy.

Despite yesterday‘s results Rowe stated: “We achieved a huge amount in the year and whilst there is still much to do, I am pleased with our progress and we remain on track.”
