Currys PC World has become the first retailer to launch its Christmas advert as the retail industry gears up for the vital trading season.

Sales of Christmas goods are reportedly already on the rise after a long and unforgiving summer for retailers, who will be hoping to offset the difficulties on the high street with a Christmas spending boost.

To mark the start of the shopping season, Currys PC World launched its Christmas advert last night at 7pm on ITV, depicting a classic Victorian Christmas complete with “upgraded” modern gadgets, sporting the slogan “the magic of Christmas, upgraded”.

Meanwhile, Argos will launch its advert tonight on ITV and Channel 4, focusing on Argos’ Fast Track service.

It features a Fast Track delivery driver who stops an imp-like character from causing chaos around the house.

Very.com is also due to launch its Christmas campaign tomorrow, depicting a young CGI Elsie who is inspired to become an astronaut after being given a helmet for Christmas.

Despite the date being nearly eight weeks away, according to Marks & Spencer sales of festive food have already jumped 13 per cent, higher than ever before at this early date.
