Tesco switches to Rainforest certified cocoa amid sustainability demand

// Tesco launches Rainforest Alliance Certified cocoa for own brand chocolate
// 80% shoppers preferred supermarkets that offered responsible food sources

Tesco has introduced Rainforest Alliance Certified cocoa for its own brand chocolate, including its Easter eggs.

The chocolate will now carry the Rainforest Alliance cocoa sourcing label, which means it comes from communities where wildlife is conserved and a farmer’s income is increased.

The latest research by Tesco revealed that the demand for sustainability was high, with nearly 80 per cent of shoppers preferring supermarkets that offered responsible food sources.

The Big 4 retailer also launched a TV advert on March 5 ahead of The Great British Bake Off which featured the Rainforest Alliance Certified green frog, in a bid to bring the news to the public’s attention.

Tesco has continued to commit to sourcing sustainable products, as in November 2018 Tesco and WWF announced their partnership with the aim of reducing the environmental impact of the average UK shopping basket by 50 per cent.

“Our collaboration with the Rainforest Alliance will help us support farmers to improve their livelihoods and protect the environment, while also offering our customers quality, sustainable and affordable products,” Tesco responsible sourcing director Giles Bolton said.

“This is just one of a number of initiatives that illustrate what we are doing to address the environmental and sustainability challenges facing our shoppers, colleagues, suppliers, and communities.”
