Aldi has announced that it will be handing its colleagues a 10 per cent bonus for November which will be paid in December ahead of Christmas.

The retailer’s 35,000 UK colleagues – both store and distribution workers – will receive the bonus as a “thank you” for continuing to work throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This year has been a difficult one for so many and our colleagues have worked tirelessly to ensure the nation continues have access to high quality affordable food,” Aldi UK and Ireland chief executive Giles Hurley said.

“This bonus is a gesture of our appreciation for our amazing Aldi colleagues who have shown incredible resilience and dedication throughout 2020.”

Most recently, Big 4 grocer Tesco committed to paying its workers in stores, warehouses and its customer engagement centre a 10 per cent bonus for hours worked over Christmas and New Year.

The grocer said hourly-paid staff would receive a 10 per cent bonus for all hours worked between December 13 and January 9, while frontline managers will get 10 per cent of their salary for weeks worked.

Meanwhile, Lidl announced plans to increase the wages of all staff who are on hourly rates.

For those outside of London, the German discounter said it would increase entry-level pay from £9.30 to £9.50 per hour.
