Zara to launch resale and repair service in the UK

Zara is set to launch a service next month that will allow UK shoppers to resell, repair or donate its clothing.

Shoppers will be able to sell now-unwanted Zara items via a sales platform on the fashion giant’s website and app.

Sellers take pictures of the products but the detailed product information is provided by Zara. Once a sale is made, the buyers details are passed on for the seller to post the order.

As part of a drive to extend the life of its clothing, Zara is also offering a repair service to shoppers, which can book in an item to be mended online or in one of the retailer’s stores.

The pre-owned service is not expected to be profitable initially.

Zara head of sustainability Paula Ampuero told The Guardian: “At this stage, this platform is exclusively conceived as a tool to help customers extend the lifetime of their clothing and take a more circular approach.”

The retailer is the latest fashion chain to jump into the world of resale.

Just this week, fast fashion giant Shein launched a peer-to-peer resale platform while Joules debuted its Joules ReWear programme last month.

Resale is expected to be a big growth area for retail.

John Lewis has vowed to create “buy back or take back” schemes in every product category by 2025 and Selfridges is aiming for almost half its interactions with customers to be based on resale, repair, rental or refills by 2030.
