Amazon to slash 10,000 jobs this week as sales slow

// Amazon is planning to lay off about 10,000 people in corporate and technology jobs starting as soon as this week
// The cuts will primarily focus on Amazon’s devices, as well as its retail division and human resources

Amazon executives are set to lay off 10,000 people in corporate and technology jobs as early as this week.

According to a report in The New York Times, redundancies for corporate and technology roles could begin in days, with just weeks to go before the busy holiday season.

This would mark the biggest jobs culling in the Seattle-based e-commerce giant‘s history and comes shortly after the announcement of mass cuts at tech firms Twitter and Meta last week.

Apple – the world’s most valuable company – has also reportedly slowed its hiring process, according to chief executive Tim Cook.

Job losses will focus primarily on the company’s devices, which includes its virtual assistant technology Alexa, plus its retail arm and human resources.

Although it remains unclear exactly how many jobs will be lost and whether the layoffs will only affect those in the United States or worldwide.

If the business does go through with the proposal to cut 10,000 jobs, it would represent a loss of about 3% of Amazon’s corporate employees

But it would be less than 1% of its global workforce of more than 1.5 million, which comprises of mostly hourly workers

The US e-commerce giant warned its growth would slow down as consumers face a cost of living crunch and businesses have been hit with rising costs.
