Asos angers shoppers with changes to Premier service

Asos has angered Premier customers by upping the minimum spend needed to secure next-day delivery.

The online giant has written to Premier members, which tend to the retailer’s most frequent customers, to inform them that from 28 February the minimum spend required to receive free next-day delivery will increase from £10 to £15.

This comes on top of Asos’s recent price hike of its Premier service, from £9.95 to £11.95.

Shopper Daisy Evans branded Premier a “rip off” and threatened to cancel her subscription.

Although Premier shoppers will no longer get free next-day delivery for orders under £15, they will be eligible for free standard delivery.

The retailer’s new CEO José Antonio Ramos Calamonte is making changes across the business to help improve profitability. This includes job cuts and slashing office space.

Asos posted a £31.9m loss in its full year to 31 August and revealed earlier this month that its UK sales dropped 8% in the four months to 31 December.

The online fashion giant has been battling rising returns rates over the past year, which has hit its margin.

Many retailers have opted to introduce returns charges over the past year to combat the steep cost of reverse logistics. Retailers including Zara, Boohoo, Mountain Warehouse and THG have all introduced returns fees for online orders.

However, one shopper branded Asos’ minimum spend increase as “an absolute joke” and said it would encourage customers to over-order and send items back.
