Asos has been forced to suspend its operations at the Barnsley fulfilment centre after damage was caused to the roof by gusty wind.

The damage caused safety concerns and disruption, which resulted in delays for the retailer’s delivery services to the UK and internationally, but Europe and North America were not impacted.

Operations at the warehouse were suspended on the evening of January 31 and, following repairs to the centre, normal operations restarted on February 3.

Asos sent an email to affected customers that said “the wind nearly blew the roof off our warehouse” and provided a 20% off code for shoppers to claim on their orders as compensation, Retail Week reported.

“Our UK and rest of the world deliveries experienced some delays last week due to wind damage to the roof at our Barnsley fulfilment centre,” Asos said.

“To ensure the safety of everyone on site, operations were briefly suspended on Tuesday evening.”

Workers at the warehouse returned to work last Wednesday and the site returned to normal operations on Friday when the repair was completed.

Asos said it contacted customers with impacted orders and briefly revised expected delivery dates for new orders, which reverted to normal on Friday.
