Primark plans to extend its store at Westfield Stratford City to “offer more choice” to customers.

The retailer said the expansion will see the current store almost double in size – from 45,100sq ft to 81,000sq ft – and is expected to be completed in early 2024.

The expansion will create 250 new jobs at the centre and forms part of Primark’s planned £140m investment in the UK high street.

Primark Retail Director UK, Kari Rodgers said: “After setting out an ambitious investment plan a few months ago, it’s exciting that we can now reveal another one of the stores set to benefit.

“We’re looking forward to extending our offering at Westfield and giving shoppers in Stratford even more of the great style and incredible value they love the most.”

Primark has already committed to opening at least four new stores over the next two years – with Craigavon opened in December, with Salisbury, Teesside Park and Bury St Edmunds to follow.

It is also planning refurbishments to existing stores as well as the relocation of some stores including Bradford and High Wycombe.

Primark had a record week in the run-up to Christmas after sales climbed 18% to £3.15bn in the 16 weeks to January 7.

Owner Associated British Foods said at the time that despite the encouraging trading, ”macroeconomic headwinds may weigh on consumer spending” in the months ahead.
