Amazon is to abandon its Gloucester Centre Severn warehouse as it evaluates its distribution network.

The online giant said the distribution centre had never been fully operational and that the vacant site will now be “sub-let”.

This comes as the retailer revealed plans it would be closing three fulfilment centres in Hemel Hempstead, Doncaster and Gourock, putting 1,200 jobs at risk.

A spokesperson for Amazon said: “We’re always evaluating our network to make sure it fits our business needs and to improve the experience for our employees and customers.

“As part of this, the vacant site in Gloucester will be sub-let.”

Warehouse workers at the retail giant’s Coventry warehouse are set to strike again later this month as the battle of pay escalates.
