Greggs has unveiled its first London airport shop at Gatwick’s South Terminal.

The food retailer said the move represents a major milestone in its expansion strategy across key transport hubs in the UK.

The 1600sq ft shop – twice the size of a typical Greggs store – is open 24 hours a day and serves the retailer’s full menu of freshly prepared salads and sandwiches, bakes, a range of sweet treats as well as hot food options.

Greggs property director Tony Rowson said: “Driven by customer demand for convenient, great value and great-tasting products, we want Greggs to be accessible, wherever, whenever and however our customers need us.

“That’s why we are now focusing on growth in travel locations, so that we can continue to adapt to our customers’ needs and lifestyles and bring Greggs to more people.”

“This new shop is indicative of the next generation of shop refits and will feature state-of-the-art design to ensure our customers have a brilliant experience when they visit us.”

The Gatwick store marks the eight airport location for Greggs and builds on its plans to open 150 net shops across the UK in 2023.

The retailer revealed last month it had its sights set on opening new stores in Cornwall, a move which could face backlash from local pasty makers.

Greggs currently operates more than 2,300 shops across the UK and is undergoing expansion plans to reach over 3,000 as part of its long-term growth strategy.
