Greggs has won the right to sell late-night sausage rolls at its Leicester Square branch.

The bakery retailer has reached an agreement with Westminster City Council that allows it to sell some baked goods and hot drinks until 2am on certain nights.

Greggs had originally planned to serve hot food and drinks 24 hours a day at its flagship Leicester Square store, but the council blocked the initiative over fears of anti-social behaviour.

Greggs had planned to appeal against the decision, with a three-day hearing due to start this week after it was refused an extended licence to sell late-night food at the branch.

But the business withdrew the appeal after reaching an agreement with the council.

The retailer can now sell pasties and sausage rolls until 2am, although items from its hot food menu – including pizzas, chicken goujons and hot baguettes – cannot be sold past 11pm.

Westminster City Council deputy leader Councillor Aicha Less said the shop must also have bouncers on the door, install CCTV, and make sure rubbish is cleared from outside the store.

“We are pleased to continue to support local businesses and look forward to working with the company going forward,” she said.

Less had previously voiced fears the store could “become a hot-spot for late night disturbances and anti-social behaviour”.
