Mike Ashley takes legal action against Morgan Stanley and HMRC over data breaches

Sports Direct tycoon Mike Ashley has launched new legal battles against investment bank Morgan Stanley and HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

The retail billionaire has filed data protection claims against the bank and government body at London’s High Court, The Sunday Times reported.

It is unclear exactly what allegations Mike Ashley has levelled at the firms, but it follows a string of recent high-profile lawsuits on data protection.

This is not the first time Mike Ashley has been embroiled in a legal battle with Morgan Stanley and HMRC.

His retail empire Frasers Group is currently seeking £50m in damages from the investment bank, after it claimed Morgan Stanley had acted “arbitrarily” and “incorrectly” by trying to force the retailer to close options positions it had built in Hugo Boss, costing the company millions as a result.

Mike Ashley also clashed with HMRC when it conducted a long-running investigation into Newcastle United, which was once owned by the tycoon. It dropped the case in 2021.
