Pret slashes prices of top sellers following profiteering accusations

Pret a Manger has reduced the price of its six best-selling sandwiches, with some seeing reductions of up to £1.

The cuts follow the food-to-go chain being accused of profiteering amid the cost-of-living crisis on the back of price rises over the past two years, including on its subscription service, which was raised from £25 per month to £30 last year.

Pret’s chief executive Pano Christou had blamed price rises on inflation, which has seen it bear cost increases in labour, ingredients and energy.

The hikes have helped Pret return to profitability after it plunged to a £225m loss during the pandemic. It reported an operating profit of £50.6m in the year to December 2022.

The new round of price cuts will see tuna baguettes lowered from £4.25 to £3.99, the Posh Cheddar baguette reduced by £1 to £3.99 and a total of 66p knocked off its cheese toastie, which now costs £4.99.

Egg mayo sandwiches have been cut from £3.40 to £2.99, with Jambon Beurre seeing a 25p reduction to £3.50 and tuna and cucumber sandwiches falling from £3.55 to £2.99.

Pret’s UK and Ireland managing director Clare Clough said: “We’ve been looking at opportunities to bring down our prices where possible”.

“Earlier this year, we reduced the prices on six of our freshly made bestselling sandwiches and baguettes by over 10% on average, including the much-loved tuna mayo baguette and Jambon Beurre.”

“Our Club Pret subscribers would also receive an additional 20% off these products, as well as across our entire menu.”
