Morrisons to restructure logistics operations, 279 jobs at risk

Morrisons is set to cut almost 300 jobs as part of a management restructure of its logistics operations.

The supermarket chain is looking to consolidate the number of warehouse manager roles at each of its seven distribution centres under a single operations manager role, The Grocer reported.

The restructure will also remove team manager roles in Morrisons’ ambient supply chain, reduce roles in its chilled chamber and reduce the number of managers and co-ordinators working within canteen teams.

The supermarket will replace the roles with new hourly-paid positions and shift managers.

Morrisons is understood to have launched a consultation last week for 297 roles, including warehouse managers, team managers, canteen co-ordinators and people advisors.

Morrisons said that the selection process will be based on factors including interviews, disciplinary records, and performance.

As part of the consultation process, which is expected to be completed by 21 April, staff will be offered alternative roles where possible.

Bellshill, which is run by a third party, will not be affected by these proposals.

The changes will also see Morrisons ditch its four-day work week model for most of its warehouse and logistics support staff and employees will continue to work Saturdays while splitting their work across five eight-hour shifts per week from 22 April.

A Morrisons spokesperson told Grocery Gazette: “As part of our ongoing plans to speed up and simplify the business, Morrisons has today announced the start of a consultation programme on some changes to the Operations and People teams across seven logistics sites excluding our Bellshill site.

“The proposed restructuring will lead to a more responsive and simpler structure that will be better able to support our retail operations seven days a week. This proposal is likely to affect around 300 roles across the seven affected sites.”
