Wilko is stepping up its online site’s digital transformation with a new strategic collaboration with Google Cloud, as it moves to ramp up the use of AI across its platform.
Backed by parent company CDS Superstores, the British variety retailer’s rollout will introduce AI-driven search, product discovery and content by using a hybrid model that functions through large language models with proprietary data and internally developed systems.
The retailer says the move marks a shift from testing AI tools to incorporating them across the customer journey, with Wilko pointing to increases in conversion and revenue from similar previous deployments across its wider brand portfolio.
The programme also forms part of a multi-million-pound investment to modernise wilko.com’s infrastructure and strengthen long-term digital capability.
Last month, CDS Superstores, which also owns The Range and Homebase, partnered with supply chain solutions platform Relex Solutions, to ramp up the group’s artificial intelligence to manage the growing complexity of its retail empire.
“This isn’t about experimenting with AI, it’s about operationalising it,” said CDS Superstores group chief digital marketing officer Ben Exal. “This collaboration with Google Cloud is about building the right foundations for the future of wilko.com.
Our focus is on building a retail platform that becomes smarter over time. By combining our own data and models with Google Cloud’s AI technologies, we’re able to move faster than traditional approaches and scale innovation in weeks, not months.
“We’re focused on making everyday shopping simpler and more accessible for our customers, while staying true to what wilko has always stood for, great value, reliability and helping people get jobs done around the home.”
Google Cloud UK retail director Andrea Williamson added: “By anchoring wilko.com’s digital transformation in Google Cloud AI, CDS Superstores is moving beyond standalone features to create a more adaptive and resilient business.
“We are proud to provide the technological backbone for an infrastructure project of this scale, helping wilko stay ahead of evolving customer expectations.”
