Matalan chief operating officer Phil Hackney has left the company after three years with the business.

Hackney joined Matalan in 2023 to lead its supply chain operations before subsequently stepping up to the chief operating officer role.

During his tenure, he played a key role in Matalan’s ongoing transformation, spanning its technology, operations, supply chain, logistics and sustainability functions.

A Matalan spokesperson said Hackney had made a “significant contribution” during his time with the retailer and helped strengthen a number of important capabilities across the business.

Hackney confirmed his departure on LinkedIn, describing his time at Matalan as an “amazing experience” and highlighting the work undertaken to transform its systems and operational functions.

He also thanked former chief executive Jo Whitfield, who brought him into the retailer, as well as Henrik Nordvall and Matalan’s wider executive team.

Hackney said he will take up a new role ‘shortly’, although he has yet to reveal where he is heading next. Matalan has not announced a successor.

Before joining Matalan, Hackney spent more than six years as chief operating officer at The Very Group and previously held senior logistics roles at Pets at Home, Tech Data and Boots.

Recently, Matalan Chief executive Henrik Nordvall stepped down after just six months in the role, with chairman Karl-Heinz Holland returning to lead the business as permanent executive chair.

Matalan is continuing to push ahead with its turnaround strategy, which includes plans to refresh 40 stores, open or relocate at least 10 sites and launch a new mobile app as it invests across its stores, product and digital proposition.

The retailer secured a further £25m commitment from its core investors earlier this year to accelerate its transformation plans.
