B&M has joined the growing list of retailers circling Poundland’s stores as it races to secure a rescue deal and avoid administration.

The company has reportedly registered its interest in snapping up a selection of Poundland shops, as owner Gordon Brothers considers selling the business outright or breaking it up.

B&M is targeting a relatively small number of locations, potentially in the low double digits, rather than pursuing a takeover of the entire chain.

Poundland currently faces an uncertain future, with nearly 600 stores and around 12,000 jobs caught up in the ongoing sale process.

B&M joins a growing list of potential buyers, including Lidl, The Range and Poundstretcher owner Fortress Investment Group, which are also understood to be eyeing parts of Poundland’s estate.

As Retail Gazette previously reported, The Range owner Chris Dawson entered the race last week, adding to competition for the retailer’s stores.

Meanwhile, at least two bids to acquire Poundland in its entirety are understood to remain on the table, including an offer from Irish property investor Martin Property Group.

The proposal, which is reportedly favoured by Poundland’s management team, would see the business acquired for as little as £1, alongside commitments to retain its stores and workforce and inject millions into its turnaround.

Poundland’s owner Gordon Brothers, which bought the chain from Pepco Group for £1 in June 2025, has appointed three restructuring specialists to its board as it considers the retailer’s future.

The US investment firm is seeking to secure a deal ahead of the crucial Christmas trading period, although a break-up involving an insolvency process remains a possibility if a solvent sale cannot be agreed.

Poundland has already undergone a sweeping restructuring programme, including the closure of more than 100 stores, as it battles rising costs and fierce competition across the discount sector.

Despite the uncertainty, recent trading figures have shown signs of improvement, offering some hope that the business could still be rescued intact.
