Tesco has reported adjusted operating profit grew 6.5 per cent to £1.78bn for the 26 weeks to 29 August, as the supermarket giant benefitted from its omni-channel operations.

Group like-for-like sales were up 1.0 per cent, with UK market increasing by 1.5 per cent – this included Food jumping 2.4 per cent.

Therefore, Tesco has increased its full-year adjusted operating profit guidance to between £3.15bn and £3.3bn, compared with its previous range of £3bn to £3.3bn.

Ecommerce sales surged 8 per cent in the half, with its quick-commerce offering Whoosh recording sales growth of 37 per cent during the half. It is on track to generate more than £500m in sales over the full year.

In July, Tesco announced it would launch on Uber Eats before expanding to the Deliveroo platform later this year.

Additionally, Tesco Media grew strongly in the half, attracting new advertisers and offering improved analytics and automation through an enhanced self-service platform.

Ken Murphy, chief executive of Tesco, said: “Our digital channels are important growth drivers for Tesco. Our new F&F website is helping even more customers discover and shop our full range of clothing.

“We are also making strong progress on AI-enabled personalisation, extending Your Clubcard Prices and beginning the customer rollout of our meal planning assistant, helping customers manage their busy lives. Our focus remains on helping customers get the best possible value from their weekly shop.

“Looking ahead, we’re excited to bring our new Christmas ranges to customers and help them enjoy a great festive season. By putting customers first and delivering against our strategic ambitions, we will continue to create long-term value for all our stakeholders.”

Earlier this week, Tesco became the first UK supermarket to guarantee paid ‘safe leave’ for employees experiencing domestic abuse.
