New retail scheme planned for Shoreditch
Shoreditch Village will include 42,000 sq ft of A1 retail space

Plans for a new retail development in London’s East End have been submitted to Hackney Council, it has been announced today.

Shoreditch Village, a 150,000 sq ft development off Shoreditch High Street, is awaiting planning permission though, should this be granted next year, the whole scheme could be completed by mid 2015.

Set to be anchored by a covered market offering local and international food, the development hopes to attract cutting edge brands and sub-brands and provide aspirational stores to appeal to the area’s broader culture.

Designed by architects Ellis Miller, the site will be the first permanent retail regeneration project in the area since the 2005 completion of the new Spitalfields Market.

Envisioned by two families who have been long-term private owners of the site since the 1970s, the project will include 42,000 sq ft of A1 retail space and A3 dining space as well as office space and a hotel on its upper floors.

Jonathan Ellis Miller, Partner at Ellis Miller Architects said of the scheme: “Shoreditch Village presented us with a huge set of challenges on one of the most high-profile and difficult sites in the capital.

“I believe we have addressed those issues in a novel and interesting way that respects the context, spirit and community of Shoreditch.

“I’m delighted that we have been able to provide so much new public space at the heart of Shoreditch Village alongside a lively mix of uses that will ensure its social and commercial success.”

Shops will be open daily between 10am and 9pm while the nine restaurants and cafes surrounding the market will offer outdoor dining to capitalise on the thriving local evening economy.

Last year, Shoreditch welcomed the world’s first pop-up mall, Boxpark, which will remain in the area for the next five years and houses brands such as Boxfresh, Vans and Puma.

Dominic White, a member of the White family which owns the site, explained that the new scheme will work in harmony with existing local businesses.

He said: “An extension of the vibrant area around Boxpark, Shoreditch House, the Albion and Boundary, Shoreditch Village is right in the heart of London’s creative district.

“The fragmented nature of property ownership in Shoreditch adds to its unique character, and our scheme will reflect the progressive and highly eclectic mix of the area.”
