Inside Hermès’ new ‘largest European store’ on London’s Bond Street

Hermès has opened a new London flagship on Bond Street, marking the French luxury house’s largest store in Europe.

The new store, at 166 New Bond Street, spans 2,000 sq m across five floors and brings together six Grade II listed buildings.

It replaces Hermès’ former London store at 155 New Bond Street, as well as its concession in Selfridges.

The flagship covers 165, 166 and 167 New Bond Street, 16 Grafton Street and 22 and 23 Albemarle Street, with 55 rooms, four lifts and two roof terraces.

The project was led by architect Denis Montel, who began work on the store with Rena Dumas Architecture Intérieure in 2021.

Shoppers enter through a seven-metre-high façade into a space featuring a vaulted ceiling designed to echo the six arches of the store’s windows.

The store leads customers through Hermès’ silk collections into an atrium, which was formerly an outdoor space and has now been covered by a new steel and glass roof.

A limestone and glass staircase, finished with a handmade calfskin handrail, connects the different floors.

The first floor features a series of 20 interconnecting rooms, including red-toned spaces dedicated to leather goods.

A second entrance opens into what Hermès describes as an “imaginary orangerie”, housing beauty, fragrance and fashion jewellery. The space features walls commissioned from London-based illustrator Katie Scott.

Hermès said much of the store’s ornamentation, colour and décor had been sourced in the UK and commissioned from British craftspeople and artists.

The interiors include patinated copper panels, straw-shaped boiserie, horsehair marquetry, Lancashire-made textured wall coverings, traditional wood panelling and powder pink mineral mortar ceilings.

Around 500 artworks, selected by Hermès artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas, are also displayed throughout the store.

Hermès said the opening forms part of its long-term development strategy, centred on creativity, craftsmanship, sustainability and its “multilocal spirit”.

The luxury house said it was “delighted” to welcome visitors to explore the space and discover its craftsmanship “within a joyful atmosphere that resonates with its surroundings”.

Gag London Equity Capital founder and strategic luxury adviser Armando Zuccali said the flagship was designed with future luxury consumers in mind.

“The store that opens on 16 June is not designed for today’s client base,” he wrote on LinkedIn.

“It is designed for the clients of 2035 and 2040 — the ones who will have their first serious Hermès experience in a maison that projects permanence.”
