Amazon Prime Day kicks off

Amazon has kicked off its biggest Prime Day sales event yet, with prices slashed on products ranging from entertainment and technology to fashion and tools.

Now in its third year, Prime Day started at 6pm last night and will for the first time run for 30 hours.

It is the online giant’s biggest marketing push of the year, and aims to boost sales during slower summer months with deals to draw new subscribers to its Prime shopping club.

Amazon hopes to use the event to increase sales of its Echo voice-activated device, which has been slashed by almost 50 per cent to £79.99.

Other deals include up to 30 per cent off laptops, up to 40 per cent off power tool, up to 30 per cent off beauty products, and up to 40 per cent off fashion brands.

The online giant also said new deals will be available every five minutes.

The Prime subscription scheme gives users access to Amazon services such as same-day delivery as well as video and music streaming services.
