Matalan staff pause strike amid new pay offer

// Matalan staff pause long-running strike after recieving new pay offer
// 500 workers at Matalan’s Northern Distribution Centre in Merseyside had been on strike for several weeks

A long-running strike by workers at Matalan has been called off – for now – after a new pay offer was made by the retailer.

About 500 members of the GMB who work at the value retailer’s Northern Distribution Centre in Knowsley, Merseyside, have been on strike for several weeks.

Some strikers even erected tents outside the warehouse as part of the protests.

However, talks this week between the GMB and Matalan produced a new deal, which union members were due to vote over the weekend.

A joint GMB and Matalan statement said: “Employees and their welfare has always been the focus, and GMB and Matalan have been working hard together to resolve the issue.

“After extensive negotiations from both sides, Matalan and GMB are pleased to announce a fully recommended deal has been brokered, which will be put to ballot this weekend.”

“GMB and Matalan will continue every effort to bring this dispute to a resolution so the employees can return to work.”

In June this year, Matalan said it would introduce 200 new jobs at its Knowsley warehouse to meet the demand for online sales.

Matalan currently has over 200 stores across the UK.
