Sales at MatchesFashion skyrocketed by 82 per cent year-on-year during the Christmas trading season, thanks to a massive increase in both online sales and new customer numbers.

In fact, the retailer made a record £94,000 single transaction via its app and at its busiest during the six week period ending January 8, one item was sold every seven minutes.

MatchesFashion said its online arm experienced a 93 per cent surge in sales during the festive period, making online sales account for 95 per cent of total revenue.

The retailer said much of the growth came from the new spring/summer collections – which experienced a 120 per cent sales surge – and from 52 per cent year-on-year growth in new customers.

In addition, 77 per cent of total sales were outside of the UK, with 145,000 items shipped to 122 countries.

The multichannel retailer also said average order values grew 16 per cent, with mobile sales accounted for half of total sales.

“This was a record growth period and continued the growth acceleration trend we‘ve seen all year,” MatchesFashion executive co-chairman Tom Chapman said.

Chief executive Ulric Jerome agreed.

“The move to mobile and app is a driving engine of our growth,” he said.

“We‘ve invested significantly in technology to improve the customer experience and, as we can see, that investment has seen consequent industry-leading growth.”
