Primark recalls flip-flops over carcinogenic chemical discovery

Three of Primark’s own-brand flip-flops are being recalled after they were found to contain a chemical that can cause cancer.

The value fashion retailer is recalling its Cedarwood State men’s black, blue and khaki-coloured flip-flops and customers are being offered a full refund without need for a proof of purchase.

The high street chain said it had come to its attention that the flip-flops “does not meet the Primark usual high standards for chemical compliance”.

The restricted substance, chrysene, is a regulated chemical commonly used in dark coloured dyes.

Primark said  the footwear were found to have amounts that exceeded the required 1mg per kg, which would pose a minimal health and safety risk to customers.

“With the safety of our customers and respect for the environment at the forefront of our minds we have taken the decision to recall this product,” Primark said in a statement.

The shoes, which were on sale since January 4, were taken off the shelves on June 2.
