Crawshaw confirms 354 job cuts & 35 store closures

Crawshaw has axed 354 jobs after it closed 35 of its stores and one distribution centre since it went into administration last week.

The butchery chain, which is mainly found around the North and Midlands, had appointed administrators from EY after it failed to secure additional funding to stay afloat.

EY said they have entered into discussions with interested parties with a view to agreeing a sale of Crawshaw in the coming weeks.

Should a a rescue deal be successful, it could safeguard the meat retailer’s remaining 261 staff.

Only 19 Crawshaw stores remain open after 35 shut down over the weekend.

Its distribution centre in Astley has also been closed, but another facility in Hellaby remains open.

Additionally, there were job cuts at the company’s head office in Hellaby.

Crawshaw’s collapse comes several years of financial losses.

According to its latest set of results for the six months to July 29, the retailer posted revenue of £21.6 million and a pre-tax loss of £1.7 million.

Food tycoon Ranjit Boparan holds a near 30 per cent stake in Crawshaw, and his 2 Sisters Food Group also supplies the chain.

Shares in Crawshaw were suspended last week after it issued a notice of its intention to appoint administrators.
