December bonuses can prevent staff departures

Retail staff who receive bonuses in December are less likely to join the rush of job searches in January.

According to online gift cards retailer One4All Rewards, a survey of 1096 UK retail workers found that 49 per cent who received a bonus from their boss have remained working at their job and were less likely to go job hunting in the new year.

The research also found 47 per cent of employees who received bonuses are less likely to accept a new job if offered one.

One4All said employees were more likely to search for new jobs in January than any other time of the year, which is why December is advantageous for retailers to offer its staff bonuses for retention purposes.

“It’s interesting to see just how far a token bonus can impact on the loyalty of those in the retail industry,” One4All managing director for UK Alan Smith said.

“Even if you just consider the amount of money that can be lost through recruitment costs when a member of staff resigns – never mind the softer negative impacts and knock-on effects that employees leaving can have, in terms of morale in the workplace – it is clearly something that is worth investing in.”
