Six retailers trying to win Mother’s Day spend

With Mother’s Day this weekend, retailers are scurrying to entice shoppers as they look to find the best deals and special gifts to say thanks to their mums.

Retail Gazette highlights six of the best Mother’s Day offers and campaigns.

House of Fraser

House of Fraser has set out to shine a spotlight on mother and daughter relationships using a fashion item that appeals to both right now – ‘mom jeans’.

The brand has cast real-life mother and daughter duos to be the face of their new mom jeans.

The department store retailer launched a model hunt on social media at the beginning of the year, giving mother and daughters from across the UK the chance to be models for a day. As well as winning the model experience, the winning pairs received a £500 House of Fraser gift card.

Morrisons

Morrisons has launched a Mother’s Day menu with all items priced at less than 99p so that kids can treat mums to more than burnt toast in bed.

The supermarket chain has launched its ‘Pocket Money Menu’ in all cafes across Scotland and the UK. Included on the menu is a variety of mum’s favourite dishes including tea, coffee, toasted teacakes and crumpets.

 

The special menu will be running up until this Mothering Sunday.

Morrisons’ head of café, Ali Lyons says: “Mums are always finding ways to brighten our day. We hope that our 99p Pocket Money Menu will help sons and daughters to show mum their appreciation and spend some quality time together.”

Morrisons is seeking to win shoppers planning a family roast to celebrate the big day with its ‘Feed the Family for a Fiver Roast Dinner Deal’.

The deal consists of a whole chicken for £2.99, a pack of potatoes for 99p and two packs of vegetables from a choice of swedes, carrots, parsnips or broccoli for 39p each. This brings the total cost of the meal to just £4.76.

If bought individually, the products would total up to £6.98.

Moonpig

Moonpig has partnered with a brand loved by mums, Cath Kidston, to create a range of flowers via its website as Mother’s Day approaches.

The flower selection is made up of three bouquets and two floral gift that are inspired by Cath Kidston’s quintessentially British floral prints and are sold exclusively at Moonpig. The giftsets come with Cath Kidston branded products such as jugs and toiletries.

The Broadway Bradford

The Broadway Bradford is introducing a unique flower wall full of surprises this weekend.

Located in the Petergate Mall, a huge ‘blooming wall’ will be installed covered in luxurious silk flowers. Shoppers will be able to take selfies, and visitors who spend more than £20 in The Broadway over the weekend can select a flower from the wall, which will be linked to exclusive prizes, gift vouchers and discounts.

Gifts will include pamper hampers, candles, chocolate and make-up.

Visitors to The Broadway will also have the opportunity to write messages to their mum in a giant Mother’s Day card which will also be in Petergate Mall.

Deliveroo

Deliveroo is offering a range of ‘last minute’ gift items for Mother’s Day, from flowers and beauty sets to chocolates, that can be delivered from partners including Boots, Waitrose, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, BP and products from M&S.

The delivery firm said sales of Mother’s Day gifts increased by over 80% last year on its platform, and flowers were the most ordered ‘last minute’ gift item on Deliveroo on Mother’s Day 2021.

Marks & Spencer

Mother’s Day is big for M&S and the retailer is vying to win spend with a special version of it’s ‘Dine in’ deal.

The limited-edition Family Dine In deal, available from 23 to 27 March, includes a roasting main, three sides and a sharing dessert that feeds a family of four for only £20.

M&S has also introduced a number of special Mother’s Day products, including the ‘mumnut’, which gives it’s much-loved Yumnut a makeover for the big day, and new cocktail the Mumoso, made with white wine, raspberry and orange juice.

It has also created a limited-edition Connie the Caterpillar ‘my hero’ cake, in which Connie is decked out in a cape and mask.
