Boots hires ex-Asda COO as retail boss heads to Amazon Fresh

Boots has hired ex-Asda chief operating officer Anthony Hemmerdinger as executive retail director as its current retail boss Peter Bowrey heads to Amazon Fresh.

Hemmerdinger will be in charge of Boots’ retail operations, including the running of its 2,000-strong store estate. He will report into Boots managing director Seb James, according to Retail Week.

Meanwhile Bowrey, who has been with Boots for three years, will join Amazon Fresh as vice-president for store operations, leading its US stores.

Hemmerdinger was among a throng of Asda execs who departed the retailer following its acquisition by the Issa brothers and TDR Capital. Other senior Asda departures included CEO Roger Burnley, CFO John Fallon and strategy chief Preyash Thakrar.

Hemmerdinger had been at Asda for six years, and was considered a potential CEO-in-waiting. He previously held senior roles at Sainsbury’s and Carphone Warehouse.
