Morrisons’ departing chief operating officer Trevor Strain could be in the lead to replace an executive role at Marks & Spencer.

Strain could replace M&S’s group chief financial officer and chief strategy officer Eoin Tonge.

He is credited alongside Morrisons chief executive David Potts for turning the grocer’s fortunes around before its £7 billion sale to private equity group CD&R.

“If I am to take on a new challenge for the next few years then it would be better to make that change at the start of the Morrisons’ journey in private equity, and not in the middle of it,” Strain said.

Strain is among a number of candidates for Tonge’s role, although no decision has yet been made by M&S,” Retail Week reported.

Strain confirmed his departure from Morrisons earlier this week.

He is also a former Tesco executive, and has worked for Morrisons since 2009. He was promoted to his current role in October 2019.
