Plans for a two-day strike by postal workers later this month has been scrapped after a legal challenge by Royal Mail.

The walkouts, which were due to take place on 16 and 17 February, have been called off after the Communication Workers Union (CWU) received correspondence about a legal challenge over the weekend, Sky News reports.

In a newsletter sent out to members, the union blamed laws that are “heavily weighted against working people” and “the risks of losing in court may potentially impact on the re-ballot – we simply cannot allow this happen”.

Despite the legal challenge, the union insisted lawyers “have advised that we could defend our position in court”.

The CWU will re-enter negotiations with Royal Mail Group this week but warned it would “significantly step up the programme of strike action” if talks fail.

CWU members walked out for 19 days last year over pay and terms and conditions in the peak postal run-up to Christmas forcing many retailers to switch couriers.
