Asda to open over 80 Express stores in December

Asda has opened a record number of its Express stores this month, with 81 new shops launching in December.

The bulk of the stores are conversions of some recently bought Co-op and EG UK sites, but eight standalone Asda Express shops have also made their debut.

The supermarket now has 229 Asda Express stores across the nation and is on track to open 1,000 throughout the UK and Northern Ireland by March.

The retailer’s most recent openings include its first convenience site in Manchester city centre as well as three new London stores.

Asda intends to launch 11 more Express stores in London during 2024.

Asda managing director of convenience Andy Perry said: “It has been a Herculean effort by the teams involved in our Asda Express roll out to convert 81 stores in one month as part of our commitment to bringing Asda’s great value offer to even more communities.

“Expansion into the growing convenience market is a key pillar of our long-term strategy to become the UK’s second largest supermarket retailer – and we know how important Asda’s great value is to families managing cost of living pressures – especially in the run-up to Christmas.”

In October, the retail giant launched a programme to convert 116 former Co-op convenience stores and attached petrol station forecourts into Asda Express shops.

Asda acquired 132 sites from its rival supermarket Co-op last year under a £438m deal.
