Amazon workers at brand new Birmingham site to strike this month

Amazon staff at its new Birmingham distribution centre have voted to join ongoing strikes over pay and working conditions.

Around 100 warehouse employees will walkout on 25 January, under strike action that has not been formally recognised by Amazon, Reuters reported.

The midlands fulfilment centre only opened in October 2023 but some workers have already voted to strike.

A spokesperson for the ecommerce giant claimed the action would cause “zero disruption” for its shoppers and that 19 union members out of 2,000 warehouse staff had voted for the strikes.

Amazon added that it planned to increase its minimum starting pay for staff to £12.30 to £13 per hour by April, as minimum wage is set to rise to £11.44 an hour the same month.

Workers at the Coventry depot could also strike again, following a year of walkouts.

However, a GMB spokesperson previously told Retail Week it is having to re-ballot workers at Coventry and that will be running through January.

The strikes build on industrial action from the company’s staff seen at Coventry and Rugeley last year.

GMB organiser Rachel Fagan said: “The message from GMB members at Amazon is the same; recognise our union and end poverty pay.”
