Morrisons is bringing back its Market Street counters in response to customer feedback.
It comes after the supermarket scrapped 35 meat and 35 fish counters from its sites across the UK last year as part of a cost-cutting measure.
The retailer also closed 52 cafes, 13 florists, four pharmacies, and all 18 branches of its Market Kitchen format.
Morrisons claimed at the time that the selected locations had been unprofitable, and the move was met with widespread backlash.
However, signs have appeared in stores reading “fresh cuts are back on the block” with “skilled butchers” returning.
Speaking to The Grocer, a Morrisons spokesman said: “Our Market Street counters are part of our DNA.
“They are at the heart of our offer and a real differentiator for Morrisons.”
The spokesman also noted that the retailer had learnt a lot from its counter closures.
He highlighted that Morrisons had improved the waste yield from its counters during the year since the closures, making them more efficient to run.
Additionally, the Market Street relaunch will see a digital upgrade, with digital ordering screens added to its pizza counters.
Counters have already relaunched at Morrisons’ sites such as Great Park in Newcastle, Herne Bay, Thornbury and Yeadon in Leeds, with more on the way.
