Asda promotes from within for new convenience MD

Asda has promoted its former vice president and group property director Chris Walker as managing director of its Express stores.

Walker began the role in January and now leads the convenience stores growth including retail and operations, promotions, commercial ranging and customer proposition operations.

The grocery giant said he would be supported by its senior directors across central retail operations, commercial, retail field operations, finance and people.

Walker takes over from current vice president of convenience Andy Perry, who has been leading the conversion programme of former EG Group and Co-op sites to Asda Express stores.

The programme is due to finish by the end of March when Perry will then exit the company.

The news comes as Asda has become the latest retailer to call on the government to overhaul its apprenticeship’s levy rules in next month’s budget.

The supermarket said the current scheme needed greater flexibility in where the levy funds could be distributed.
