Company Shop Group has redistributed more than one billion surplus items since its launch, as the business reported another year of growth in its latest impact report.
The surplus redistributor and retailer said 117 million individual units were redistributed in the past 12 months alone, including 47,000 tonnes of food and drink.
It said this helped save 121,000 tonnes of CO2 and cut customer shopping bills by £137m across its Company Shop and Community Shop estate.
The business, which works with more than 800 retailers, brands and manufacturers, also said it paid £51m to partners for surplus goods over the last year, taking the five-year total to £219m.
“Each year, the UK produces around 10.7 million tonnes of food waste, presenting a potentially catastrophic threat to our planet, contributing significantly to carbon emissions and the unnecessary use of natural resources,” said group managing director Chris Burns.
“Our purpose has always been clear, to stop surplus becoming waste by creating an effective and easy solution for the industry to redistribute surplus, at scale.”
Burns said the last year had been a strong one for the group, with network expansion, new partners and further Community Shop openings.
He added: “I want to thank all of our partners and our amazing colleagues who have help deliver such positive impact.”
