Nutella has gone viral on social media after making an unexpected appearance on NASA’s Artemis II mission, prompting the brand to say it had travelled, quite literally, “further than any spread in history”.
The chocolate-hazelnut spread brand was spotted floating in the cabin during a live broadcast of the astronauts in space, spinning perfectly to reveal the product’s label.
Fans have already taken to social media to describe the clip as ‘the best free marketing a brand can receive’, with some users even speculating that NASA had planned the moment as a sort of paid “product placement.”
However, NASA has firmly rejected the claims, saying crew food is not selected through brand partnerships, with press secretary Bethany Stevens stating the appearance “was not product placement”.
Instead, Nutella has taken to social media platform X to post: “Honored to have traveled further than any spread in history,” adding a rocket ship emoji to the video that’s now garnered over one million views.
“Taking spreading smiles to new heights.” NASA’s Kennedy Center replied: “Enjoying sweet treats while our Artemis crew takes sweet photos of the Moon!”
Nutella parent company Ferrero added: “We were over the moon to see how an unexpected glimpse of Nutella was able to spread a smile to our fans – even in space! We’ve always known Nutella is out of this world.
“Now we have proof. We congratulate NASA and its international partners and wish the crew a safe journey and a successful mission.”
