Asda‘s former chief customer officer Barry Williams has been hired by Morrisons as its new trading director for ambient.

Williams will join the supermarket chain next February, a year after he quit Asda where he worked for eight years leading its food trading division.

He will take over Andy Pleasance, who is moving on to work on “special projects” for Morrisons, according to the Retail Week.

In his new role, Williams will look after Morrisons‘ grocery, beers, wines and spirits, baby goods, household and health and beauty offers.

“Barry brings a wealth of trading experience and relationships with food suppliers as well as a strong understanding of our customers,” group commercial director Darren Blackhurst said.

“His arrival is another step in shaping a Morrisons team that will listen to and work hard for customers.”

The hire comes as Morrisons chief executive David Potts continues to turnaround the business, despite profits and sales falling in its last trading year.
