Online sales surge bolsters Bonmarché’s quarterly results

Women’s value retailer Bonmarché has revealed encouraging results from its first quarter, with sales up 2.7 per cent year-on-year.

Of that number, online sales rose by 27.3 per cent while store-only like-for-like sales fell by 1.2 per cent.

The growth comes on the back of strong comparatives, with online sales in the first quarter of the last financial year up 39 per cent.

Bonmarché, which operates 323 stores in the UK as well as online operations, said it was pleased with the improvement in trading stores compared to the second half of its previous financial year.

The retailer has had a mixed bag of recent results, posting a 4.5 per cent drop in like-for-like store sales during the preceding quarter.

“The improved sales performance during the first quarter, achieved in a clothing market which, whilst helped to some extent by more seasonal weather, remains challenging, underpins our confidence in the strategy,” chief executive Helen Connolly said.

“The board’s expectations for the full year remain unchanged.”
