UK “world leader” in food waste reduction as new Roadmap scheme is launched

A new “world first” food waste reduction initiative has been launched by nearly 100 retailers and suppliers in the UK.

Food waste charity Wrap has today launched a new “landmark” Food Waste Reduction Roadmap in partnership with IGD, positioning the UK as a world leader against food waste.

89 companies have so far signed up to the Roadmap, which is due to see the UK’s major retailers and suppliers begin publishing details of both their contribution towards food waste and what action is being taken to stem it.

By 2026 the initiative aims to see all of the UK’s top 250 retailers and suppliers reporting and acting on food waste, with half of these expected in the first 12 months.

“I think today’s announcement is quite transformational,” Wrap chief executive Marcus Glover said.

“I think the most important thing is agreeing on a common system of measurement because without that it is difficult to persuade companies to publish their figures.

“The fact that we have agreed on this should make them feel more confident. Whilst even now it may take some time for some of the to feel confident, the fact that we hope to have half of the top 250 companies measuring and reporting their food waste figures by this time next year makes the UK a world leader in taking action.”
