Morrisons has saved over one million bags of surplus food from going to waste in the UK through its partnership with Too Good To Go.

The grocer said it was the first supermarket to partner with food saving platform Too Good To Go to redistribute its surplus food in October 2019.

The surplus food is redistributed in ‘Magic Bags’ to allow people to access food at a lower price while helping to prevent food from ending up in landfill.

Morrisons has already committed to halving food waste by 2030.

To save food from going to waste, consumers can simply download the free Too Good To Go app and search for their local Morrisons store with unsold produce.

They can then purchase a ‘Magic Bag’, collect it at an allotted time and take it home to enjoy. Morrisons’ grocery Magic Bags contain a variety of surplus grocery items and cost £3.09 and are guaranteed to contain at least £10 worth of food.

Magic Bags are now available from all 397 Morrisons cafés in the UK, offering both warm and cold bag options. The contents of each café bag has a value of up to £11 but are sold to customers for just £2.99 through the app.

Morrisons corporate responsibility manager, Rebecca Cranshaw said: “We’re thrilled to have reached this significant milestone.

“Through our partnership with Too Good To Go, we have not only saved our customers money but have now rescued over 1,000 tonnes of surplus food from being thrown away, helping us to work towards our target to halve food waste by 2030.”
