Marks & Spencer to rent out capsule wardrobes for cash-strapped shoppers

// M&S is to begin renting different capsule wardrobes of 10 different outfits as shoppers look for cost-effective ways to switch up their style
// The five, six- or seven-piece womenswear collections can be rented from £39 a capsule for five days

Marks & Spencer is set to start hiring out capsule wardrobes of 10 different outfits for up to a month, as it looks to address the growing sustainability concerns around fast fashion while promising a more economical way for shoppers to regularly change their looks.

The five, six or seven-piece womenswear collections from the department store retailer can be rented via Hirestreet from £39 a capsule for five days.

A total of 78 womenswear items, including jeans, footwear and accessories, would be included in the scheme.

Since its launch on the platform in November last year, M&S has worked with Hirestreet to test and learn clothing rental behaviours and found that although the rental is typically associated with formal dressing, 53% of Hirestreet customers rented the retailer’s products for casual social events.

M&S managing director of clothing and home Richard Price said: “This season it’s not just about what we offer but how – this is just one of the ways we’re working to support customers as they expect to lower their carbon footprint.”

Hirestreet chief executive and founder Isabella West said: “M&S x Hirestreet Capsules are a global first for the rental market – they offer customers the ability to access multiple stylist-curated looks in a sustainable and incredibly affordable way. We are so excited to be working with M&S on this industry-shaping project, we believe it is exactly what is needed to move the UK rental market forward.”

M&S’s partnership with Hirestreet is part of M&S’ commitment to drive the circular economy as part of its Plan A programme target to become a Scope 3 net zero business by 2040.
